BRIAN BORU (941-1014) roi d’Irlande (1002-1014)

Fils de Cenneidigh, Brian Boru (ou Brian Borumha) devint roi de Munster (978), puis roi suprême (ard -ri ) de l’ensemble du pays; il se distingua dans la lutte contre les envahisseurs danois. En 968, Mahon, autre guerrier célèbre, battit les Danois à Sulchoit, près de Tipperary. Brian battit le roi de Leinster qui s’était allié aux Danois de Dublin puis le roi de Meath et fut alors, en 1002, reconnu comme roi suprême. Mais le souverain de Leinster restait toujours son ennemi et, aidé par les Danois de Dublin, reprenait les armes. Une sévère bataille eut lieu près de Dublin, à Clontarf, en 1014. Les Danois furent battus mais un fuyard réussit, avec l’aide de deux hommes à leur service, à pénétrer dans la tente de Brian et à le tuer.

Brian est considéré comme l’unificateur du pays.
